2008 SPRING Artist’s Getaway Weekend, May 15-18, 2008
Take a long weekend for just painting on location in the White Mountains. All skill levels are welcome. This will be our fourth spring weekend at the Bartlett Inn.
Pinkham Notch, Crawford Notch, The Kancamaugus, North Conway and a thousand painting locations from old buildings to sweeping mountain views are within a short drive. You can paint alone or in a group. If it is your first trip to the area others can point you toward your painting preference. In bad weather we have found locations to
get under cover or paint at the Inn.
Thursday paint your way up to the Bartlett Inn and gather after dinner in the Inn to chat. Friday morning have a great breakfast at the Inn and head out to paint. I will do a painting demo for those interested. There are many fine eateries in the area. Saturday eat and paint. Saturday night we order pizza in and check out our paintings. Sunday is breakfast and paint your way home.
We have had all skill levels join us at the painter friendly Bartlett Inn. Nick and Miriam are great hosts and have a variety of lodging options. Nick has joined us on occasion. All reservations need to be made through the Bartlett Inn in Bartlett, New Hampshire.
This is not a workshop, the only cost is lodging.

WWPO Final Update from NHPleinAir

Our 3rd day of the World-Wide Paint Out was spent at Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden in Concord NH. The day got off to a slow start with low clouds and mist and only 4 artists daring to venture out to paint. Three of us stayed under the shelter of a large overhang on the deck at the gallery and the 4th had her own 1 person shelter! A few others showed up later in the day, and we had a good dozen by 3 PM - reception and sale time!
The gallery hosted a wine and cheese reception and our wet paintings were displayed on tabletop easels. Public traffic was a bit slow, probably due to the weather, but we did have 20-30 visitors and 3 paintings were sold.

IPAP WorldWide Paint Out: NHPleinAir Update!
Friday: We had 14 painters at the Contoocook Village Dam - some NHPlein Air members, some who joined us because they'd read about it in the papers. Three of our members in Maine stayed closer to home to paint, but will be joining us for painting on Sunday and to participate in our wet painting sale. Another member stopped by to cheer us on ... so we had a total of 17 painters - a new record! We also had quite a few visitors who came by to watch us work, most because of press coverage prior to the event.
Saturday: We had a total of 19 painters! 15 at Dimond Hill Farm, our 3 in Maine, and one who was in a local art show but painted at his booth so he could say he participated. Several more new artists joined us today, again due to publicity. Lots of visitors. Now we just hope all these folks show up tomorrow for the painting sale! And we hope the weather doesn't force us indoors!
A curious weather note - our group has been particularly lucky weather-wise since the group started and we've actually recently adopted the motto "If the forecast said scattered, it's never mattered!" Today there were forecasts of scattered T-storms towards late afternoon. At our location is got pretty dark and the winds kicked up (causing us to get ready to make a run) and we got about 5 drops of rain but nothing more. One of the workers at the farm had been off site for a few minutes and said that less than 10 minutes up the road it was raining so hard that she couldn't see out her windshield, even with the wipers on high speed. We were TRULY blessed and our luck continues to hold.
I've got lots of photos, but no really good group photos as we were all spread out pretty well on both days. Hopefully we can get one good group shot at tomorrow's reception.

NHPleinAir Artists in New Hampshire To Do Magazine
The September issue of New Hampshire To DO magazine, a beautiful full color glossy publication, has a stunning 3 page article (pages 20-22) about White Mountain painters, with a "then and now" aspect. The article talks about the White Mountain school painters at the turn of the century - Benjamin Champney, Thomas Cole, etc and has full color images of two of Champney's paintings. It mentions the White Mountain art exhibit that is currently in place at the Museum of NH History in Concord.
NHPlein Air Artists is the focus of the "now" aspect of the article and images of paintings by Sharon Allen & Elaine Farmer appear right there with the Champney images! There's also a photo of Elaine painting that Sharon took on an outing in June, and that photo shows Elaine and part of the view that is the subject of her painting which appears next to the photo. Neat to compare the images!
The article ends with a highlight block that lists details of NHPleinAir's info for the IPAP World-Wide Paint Out and our other upcoming paint out at the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm on October 6 in Tamworth, NH. The Sunday date for our IPAP event is wrong there (September 10), but it is correct in the article itself and readers should be able to easily figure out that it's the 9th since the days are listed in sequence.

We're very excited about this article! The magazine has a fairly widespread circulation and is available in States other than NH (generally at Barnes & Noble and Borders) , so see if you can find a copy in your area. I'll be sending a copy of the magazine to Jacq.

NHPleinAir Artists to hold Paint Out and Wet Paint Sale (Oct 6)
All artists who are in the area at the time are welcome to join us for
this event and the general public are invited to come watch artists at
work and learn about painting en plein aire.
WHO: NHPleinAir Artists members and any other plein air artists
who would like to join us for the event
WHAT: 1 day paint out and wet paint sale*
WHERE: Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm, Tamworth NH
* 20% from sale of each painting to be donated to the Museum
in support of their educational programs
WHEN: Saturday, October 6 from 10AM - 4PM
FEE: $5 registration fee, which will also be donated to the museum
Columbus Day Weekend is often peak foliage season, and definitely
peak "leaf peeper" (tourists who come to see the foliage) season here
in NH. The village of Tamworth is a beautiful little historic town
with artistic roots dating back many decades. Picture in your mind a
rolling grassy field with sections of rock wall. Add cows. Sheep. A
small pond. A gorgeous old barn now painted a soft yellow with white
trim. Brilliant fall foliage along the edges of the fields and off in
the distance. A white steepled church to the right, partially obscured
by 100 year old lilac bushes (which are not in bloom at this time of
year). Victorian homes on the street. Now add Mount Chocorua - one of
the most painted and photographed mountains in the world - sitting off
in the not too far distance as a backdrop to the scene. Sigh.
If you've been thinking about a trip to New England for foliage season,
come on out and join us for the paint out while you're here!
Registration form is available at nhpleinair.com

NHPleinAir Artists to Participate in IPAP Worldwide Paint Out
Here's what's been sent out to a slew of NH Newspapers, our TV station, and radio stations:
5th Annual World-wide Paint Out and Wet Paint Sale
On September 7, 8 and 9 some of the region's most talented outdoor painters will bring their paint boxes and easels to the Concord area to participate in the 5th Annual World Wide Paint Out. The event is the creation of International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), and local participation has been made possible through NHPleinAir Artists with the cooperation of The Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden. This year approximately two dozen artists from throughout the region will participate in the event. The artists will be coming from all over NH – everywhere from Sunapee to Pittsburg to Derry and points in between – and from coastal ME and northern MA as well. Many artists pre-registered a month in advance including Sharon Allen, Joanne Beausoleil, Belle Choate, Ellen Davis, Sandra Garrigan, Michael Kennedy, Brenda Kenney, Aline Lotter, Hannah Phelps, Jeanne Pierce, and Ann Marie Therrien.
NHPleinAir Artists invites all plein air artists from the region to join them on location from 10-4 on any or all of the 3 days:
Friday September 7 - participants will assemble in Contoocook Village to render paintings of the dam, the bridges, and other scenic and historic subjects.
Saturday September 8 - the group will be at Dimond Hill Farm in Concord to capture the essence and beauty of this historic site with their brushes.
Sunday September 9 – Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden in Concord will be host for the day's painting and a wine and cheese reception from 3-5 PM. Beginning at 3 PM, paintings produced during the 3 day event will be available for sale and a percent of the selling price of each painting will be donated to Mill Brook Gallery and Five Rivers Conservation Trust.
The public is invited to join in the fun by watching individual artists work and to move from painter to painter throughout each of the days, and are encouraged to come view the art and meet the artists at Sunday's reception & sale. Event organizer Sharon E. Allen says that for the artists there is a joy about paintings outdoors and that for the public this is a wonderful chance for people to see professional artists at work, developing their paintings in response to the beauty in nature. She and members of NHPleinAir Artists are particularly excited about the special nature of this annual event in which artists throughout the US and, literally, all over the world assemble in groups in their local areas to paint simultaneously on a global scale.
About Painting en plein aire: Plein air artists seek the quality of natural light and atmosphere outdoors. Their artwork is in direct response to the beauty they find in nature. They use a variety of media, from oils, through watercolors and pastels. Plein air painting developed in France in the mid 19th century and is becoming increasingly popular. Last year's event drew artists from all over the Globe. Many new plein air painting groups were formed directly from this event. IPAP, who has members who reside throughout the World, is the blanket organization for individual plein air groups and was created for the sole purpose of advancing the execution and enjoyment of plein air painting without limitations of borders or regions. Its members share inspiration and encouragement both on the Internet and at "paint outs". They encourage other artists to get out and do it, to paint with other artists and share ideas.
