Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Day

The Niagara Falls Arts and Culture Committee had a community arts awareness day recently at Niagara Square on McCloud Rd in Niagara Falls.
The purpose was to remind area residents of the vast array of arts organizations and of course, talent and culture groups.
I had a display, along with information set up about International Plein Air Painters, a WORLDWIDE Organization. In September each year IPAP has brought in plein air painters to compete for awards as part of the annual WORLDWIDE Paint Out.

IPAP Member - Clive Pates -Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art continuing exhibit

“The Will to Endure”

Contemporary landscape paintings from the South, the Southwest and Great Britain will be exhibited at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi. Exhibit runs Oct. 5-Nov. 23.

The artists are: Clive Pates, Guest Curator, Gulfport, Mississippi; Gerald DeLoach of Alligator, Mississippi; Graham Giles of Suffolk, England; the late Bruce McGrew of Oracle, Arizona; James Cook of Tucson, Arizona; and George Thurmond of Starkville, Mississippi.

A major landscape painting show featuring the best in contemporary work from two continents opens October 5 at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art. Called “The Will to Endure”, the exhibit pays homage to the eternal beauty and challenges of nature and the ways in which artists interpret their immediate landscapes. Guest curator for the exhibit is Clive Pates of Gulfport, who studied as a Fulbright Scholar at the New York Academy of Art, and who has worked and painted in Great Britain and the United States. Pates, whose work will be included in this six-man show, is an accomplished artist whose essay is in a book accompanying this exhibit.

While the Ohr-O’Keefe museum concentrates on ceramic art, other art forms including painting are also often explored. Pates comments in his introduction to “The Will to Endure”: “Just over a year ago the director of the Ohr Museum asked me to curate a show from my own perspective as a 'Plein-Air’ landscape painter. As an internationally-based artist, I soon became aware of the possibilities this show could represent ~ giving me the opportunity to bring together a diverse selection of artists’ work that would bear witness to both the relevance and endurance of landscape painting... One thing can be said, within all movements and ism’s, when painting comes from the heart, and taps into this fundamental emotional energy, something truly exciting and memorable happens.”

Many of the works in the show will be available for purchase, and a new color catalog of the works will also be sold both at the museum and online. Happy 6th Birthday IPAP !

6 years ago, on the tail of 9-11, International Plein Air Painters was founded.

The idea was one that needed to happen and with the events of that autumn, there was no more procrastinating. ..

We continue to grow in accomplishment and commitment to the plein aire tradition.2007 marked the beginning of the World Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists with an inaugural exhibit at the Karpeles Museum in Newburgh, NY, headed by IPAP Signature Member and Regional Ambassador Linda Richichi with co hosts Karl Leitzel and J.R. Baldini.
The Tour then headed on to St. Augustine Gallery in Florida.
2008 will see a new segment of the Tour with IPAP/LAI members eligible for jurying into the tour.

Questions can be addressed to Linda Richichi and Co Director Julie Houck who took on the position later this summer.

Paul Sherman assumed the head position with the IPAP Advisory Panel, that has been the backbone of IPAP and does the jurying for Signature members.

In 2002, the first Worldwide Paint Out was established, with groups registering individually and painting in different locations around the globe.
We just held the 5th Worldwide Paint Out in September 2007. The purpose was to raise awareness of plein air painting and to connect plein air painters, as well as market a means of getting publicity for individuals and groups in their locale, by tying into the worldwide event.IPAP now mails out a newsletter to all members 4 times annually.
The times are approximate according to what news is in our office. Advertising for members is nominal.

2007 also saw a new BLOG for IPAP, headed by blogmaster Brandy Gale. Please keep us informed of your comings, goings, awards, etc. Send info to ipapblog@gmail. com

LOCAL COLOR is about a successful artist who looks back with loving memories on the summer of his defining year, 1974. A talented, but troubled eighteen-year old art student befriends an elderly alcoholic genius painter who has turned his back on not only art, but life. The two form what appears to be at first a tenuous relationship. The kid wants to learn all the secrets the master has locked away inside his head and heart. Time has not been kind to the old master. His life appears pointless to him until the kid rekindles his interest in his work and ultimately gives him the will to live. Together, they give one another a priceless gift. The kid learns to see the world through the master's eyes. And the master learns to see life through the eyes of innocence again. LOCAL COLOR is based on director George Gallo's real life experience.
World-renowned painter, Richard Schmid says, "Without a doubt, the strength of the insights in the film are due to the fact that George Gallo, besides writing and directing LOCAL COLOR, is an accomplished painter in his own right."
Theater owner Dan Harkins personally selected the film to open at Harkins Camelview in Scottsdale.
Additionally, George will be in attendance at the screening to host a special post Q&A with the audience.
