St. Lucia Plein air painter workshop - Jan. 2010

After an absence of a few years, Charles & I are returning to St. Lucia in January 2010.

My husband and I taught painting and photography workshops there each January for 8 years.

The photo workshops were for Professional Photographers of America, where other professional photographers could take courses towards a degree. The painting workshops, were an opportunity for me to meet artists that live in St. Lucia, like now, IPAP Regional Ambassador Alcina Nolley, a very talented artist, as well as artists who traveled to the island for the workshops.

I will be doing

2, 3 and four day plein air painting workshops

all info about the workshop & for registration is at

We're looking forward to going back to visit

all the friends we have made over the years.

Don't put off JOY...

the minute you make a decision to do something

wonderful for yourself,

you experience JOY,

far ahead of the experience in 'reality'

FEATURE ARTISTArtist Statement

Barbara Churchley’s paintings reflect her personal connection with the western landscape she lives in. Her paintings in pastel and oil are interpretive and expressive. Her passion for the outdoors has taken her to the summit of all 53 ranked 14,000’ peaks in Colorado. She has explored the landscape “up close and personal” through multiple marathons, hikes, and backpack trips. Churchley finds inspiration painting en plein air in western Colorado where she lives, to the far corners of the world where she frequently travels, pursuing her other passion of birdwatching.

Plein Air Painter- International Plein Air Painters- October Feature Artist

Susan Knight Smith

Susan fine art landscapes, portraits, still life

Susan Knight Smith works primarily in pastel, a medium that allows her to combine her love of expressive drawing with vibrant color. In addition to landscapes, she paints portraits, figure studies, still life, intimate garden scenes, and particularly enjoys plein air painting, or painting out of doors. Susan’s paintings reflect her love of nature, her fascination with the juxtaposition of colors and the play of light, and an enchantment with particular or unique people, places, or things. Of her work, she simply says, "I paint what delights me." She finds much to delight her in the metro Atlanta area where she lives, or near the E. Tennessee home where she grew up. She has also found inspiration for many of her paintings on trips to France, Italy, Mexico, the Arizona desert, and the coast of Maine.

Artist Statement

I live and paint out of passion for the natural world. I am inspired by nature, family and fellow artists to see beyond the surface and to share the experience – a vision in pigment and texture. My immediate goal is to extract the maximum amount of inspiration from the moment and have fun doing it while surrounded by and immersed in the natural elements. Somehow the soul of the scene finds its way on to the canvas.

My simple desire is to make the next painting my new favourite and to improve in capturing the essence of the subject with lots of colour and bold strokes!
