Plein Air Painter - IPAP DEC Feature Artist Lawrence Altaffer

Plein Air Painter - IPAP DEC Feature Artist Lawrence Altaffer

More info and images CLICK HERE
Lawrence Altaffer is an award winning artist who paints representational impressionist landscapes, working primarily in oils, but also in pastels and watercolor. He began painting in 1997 and is primarily self-taught, but has received instruction in painting at the Corcoran School of Art and The Art League. His studio is located in his home, Doubleview, which is an eighteenth century log home near Syria, Virginia on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
His paintings have been exhibited in several prestigious juried national exhibitions including the Oil Painters of America, Arts For The Parks, the Salmagundi Club, Paint America, and the Salon International. In August 2003 “Taggart Lake” was awarded Best In Show out of seven hundred paintings at the Annual American Landscape Show at The Art League in Alexandria, Virginia. Howard Paine, former art director of National Geographic Magazine, served as juror for this show and stated that Altaffer showed “outstanding competence in painting water, and rendering it in an infinite number of colors”.
Lawrence Altaffer is an elected member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters. This is one of the oldest plein air painting groups in the United States and membership is limited to a maximum of forty painters from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. He is also an elected member of the Salmagundi Club in New York which is one of the most venerable and prestigious art organizations in America, whose roster has proudly included renowned artists such as Winslow Homer, Thomas Moran, William Merritt Chase, and N.C.Wyeth. He is also a member of OilPainters of America, Allied Artists of America, American Impressionist Society, American Society of Marine Artists and the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association. He is listed in Who’s Who In American Art.

Plein Air Painters - June Feature Artist Linda Richichi

ARTIST STATEMENT* 2009

For me, painting is a pilgrimage — a journey into the mystery of creation and, through that sacred path, ultimately a journey into the deepest reaches of my soul. If in my painting I am successful in reaching my goal, then I see it as a bridge into you.

Whether I am painting in the breathtaking Hudson Valley, near Tuscan castles, or on a sun-drenched beach in Maui, my intent is to capture the underlying brilliance — the spiritual energy — that underlies all of nature. At this point of my development, painting en plein air, absorbed into nature’s grand silence of communication, with all of my senses acting as ready receptors to whatever might be presented to me, seems to most further my mission of discovery. Painting in nature has heightened my awareness of the need to take care of this sacred ground.

With intuition leading the way, I avoid focusing on details to allow for a total immersion of self into the “greater” self that surrounds me. Slowly, the world of form and color merges and shifts, separates and impresses, the whole dissolving into an insistent mood of pure energy. It is this distillation of both what is seen and not seen that I attempt to capture on my canvas. When a mixture of color and form resonates in my being, when I feel that I am at one with nature and that my painting is reflecting that union, then I feel a sense of spiritual awakening. The magic is there and the painting is complete.

The materials I select are those that leave the least amount of waste behind. The Mini Circles Collection are painted with the new Golden Open Acrylics on wooden disks that were saved by the Hudson Valley Materials Exchange in New Paltz, NY from going into the waste stream. I am always on the lookout for products that are of the highest quality and green.

As founder of the World Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists, it was my intention that this group act as stewards of the land as well as the art acting as a bridge between countries. An upcoming book will feature the works of the special places these artists have selected

In the end, it is my hope that through my painting I have passed along a respect and love of our land and the need to take care of her.

Feature Artist December 2007 - Barbara Perrotti - Florida

It is with strong motivation that I continue onward, having the same enthusiasm with which I first began my career as an artist. My time is filled with painting and working with my students. I try to instill in my students a feeling of inspiration and a thirst for learning. More than ever, my focus in 2008 is leaning towards people and their individual environments. My need to establish a sense of place; and beyond that, a moment of quality is of the utmost importance.... constantly treating my subject matter as mearly a vehicle to further explore the elements of painting.
Barbara Perrotti is listed in Who's Who in American Art and is an active member in the following professional organizations:

International Plein Air Painters ( Sig. Status, SE Ambassador),
National Mus. of Women in the Arts,
American Impressionist Society,
Southern Ladies Art Conference,
Plein Air Florida (Signature Status).

Barbara was instrumental in founding the Emmons Cottage Gallery Co-op, East Coast Plein Air and Group of Eight.
Ms. Perrotti takes part in various plein air invitationals and competitions. She began formal drawing lessons at the age of seven; further education included the Paier School of Art and studies with Robert Brackman, Lois Griffel and Burt Silverman.

Barbara has recently received a professional artist development grant to further her career.
