ARTIST STATEMENT
My paintings are an emotional response to the way I see my subject and I portray them as such.
Light is what draws me to a subject whether it is the coast and landscape here in Wexford or the canals in Venice.
I look, I see, and then I paint that emotion that first attracted me to the subject.

Plein Air Painting Workshop - Feb 27 & 28 Sarasota/Longboat Key

The Sarasota/Longboat Key plein air painting workshop is just a short 2 wks away !

I'm excited to be able to paint outdoors again after the last month of cold, since returning from 2 wks painting in beautiful St. Lucia.

As you may know, this part of Florida is my favorite to paint. It has everything all in one place - water, lush greenery, quaint street scenes...let's hope it doesn't have snowscenes...lol

If you're in Florida, drive down for the weekend and join us. The workshop is two days Feb 27 & 28 from 10:00 am - 4:30pm for $275.00 pp - instruction only and PayPal is available for convenience. Notice how it's already starting to stay light longer ? I noticed on Fri, it was still light at 5pm EST.

St. Lucia Plein air painter workshop - Jan. 2010

After an absence of a few years, Charles & I are returning to St. Lucia in January 2010.

My husband and I taught painting and photography workshops there each January for 8 years.

The photo workshops were for Professional Photographers of America, where other professional photographers could take courses towards a degree. The painting workshops, were an opportunity for me to meet artists that live in St. Lucia, like now, IPAP Regional Ambassador Alcina Nolley, a very talented artist, as well as artists who traveled to the island for the workshops.

I will be doing

2, 3 and four day plein air painting workshops

all info about the workshop & for registration is at

We're looking forward to going back to visit

all the friends we have made over the years.

Don't put off JOY...

the minute you make a decision to do something

wonderful for yourself,

you experience JOY,

far ahead of the experience in 'reality'

April IPAP Feature plein air painter

Jose Rodriquez

Artist Statement

I have been painting and drawing for over 25 years, including 18 years as a graphic artist/designer.
A variety of creative projects have enriched my artistic skills throughout my art career.
Even though I still paint studio work, I get most of my enjoyment from painting outdoors. I feel so inspired when I am surrounded by mother nature and the challenges she brings. I am very proud when people walk by and see my painting in progress and ask many questions of the painting process. If I am not painting with my group of the Ocala Plein Air Painters, I am usually painting from aboard my pontoon
boat. I am fascinated by the waters and the beautiful colors around me that mother nature displays.
I am obsessed with wanting to paint all that I see and want others to see this also.
There is nothing more fascinating and rewarding than a finished painting that was painted on location.

Myrtle Beach , SC en plein air painting workshop - April 25 & 26, 2009

Join us in beautiful Myrtle Beach, SC for 2 days of plein air painting
April 25 & 26, 2009
Oil Painting and acrylic plein air workshop.
South Carolina click HERE

Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:30pm
Locations will be in the vicinity of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Come join us as we paint the quaint towns, marshes and Carolina pines.

Workshop will concentrate on grisaille - working a value plan directly on your canvas.

Ever wondered why your finished painting doesn't quite match your
'minds eye vision' that you had when you started your painting ?

Insure a dynamic composition before your brush hits the color.
Learn to go for the drama in your painting !
This special 2 day workshop is only $250.00pp (reg pricing $275.00 for a 2 day workshop)

Workshop 2 day- Title : Problem solving ‘on your feet’ en plein air painting

Description :
2 day working on location workshop to help you achieve drama in your painting. Demo/lecture each morning.
You will learn to ‘bake the cake ‘before you applying the frosting.
Ever wondered why your finished painting bears little resemblance to the excitement you felt when starting your painting ?
Students will work on location and complete 2 12x16 or smaller paintings per day.

Goals :
What you can expect from this workshop

Students at the end of a 2 day workshop will be able to recognize a strong composition and see values using grisalle. This will enable you to make decisions when doing problem solving on your own, painting on location.
Grisaille studies, directly on canvas will enable you to commit to a composition and value plan instead of constantly adjusting your values and shadows, commonly known as ‘chasing the light’. This eliminates the also common fragmented, unfocused painting.

Experience level : Beginner to Intermediate

Prerequisite Student Skills: It is suggested that beginners have the experience of at least one drawing course.

Student Required Materials: The workshop is taught using a limited primary color pallette. A complete list of suggested oil & acrylic pigments is supplied. Canvas board or stretched canvas 12 x 16 or smaller. A support for canvas and carrying materials. Incidental list also provided. A painting umbrella is strongly suggested.

Class maximum : 15 students

This workshop is focused on making you a faster and better painter, capturing the essence of the landscape

Workshop is from 10:00 - 4:00 pm
2 day Workshop Cost pp is $250.00 US

Plein Air painting TIP

With plein air painting, I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. What plein air painting is about, is relating
your feelings about the scene, and not about copying nature.
I have seen artists walk around endlessly looking for subject.

A much more dramatic way to paint is to look for 'light'.

Subject is secondary for me. An ordinary object in a wondrous light becomes extraordinary !

And when you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finishing what you can do to make the painting
more exciting.

Is your painting missing something but you can't put your finger on it ?

It probably wasn't there to begin with...

Go for the drama !
