Colleague Plein Air Painters,
For years, I have personally heard rave reviews from many of you in person, via email, by phone and regular mail about Plein Air Magazine. Whether you were a subscriber or not, ever saw it or not, artists and galleries from everywhere were (and are still aware) of this most respected publication - and were saddened at its passing.
We now have a grand opportunity to let the publisher (who seeks our opinion and thoughts) offer our collective “voice”, and most of all of our support (or not) of bringing back Plein Air Magazine. Certainly there would be changes. Nevertheless, I remember the days of what I have always felt was our “Camelot” - when for the one bright shining moment, plein-air painting was put on the map in earnest.
The magazine promoted our plein-air heritage (which many of us never knew about), with features about masters of the past, present and future, along with artists getting out of their studios to discover painting on location for the first time. My personal observation was that the magazine had a direct and indirect impact on the plethora of professional and local groups rising up around the U.S. and the globe, collector education and more.
Please join me in this effort to MBRING BACK PLEIN AIR MAGAZINE.
I can only reach the contacts I have here on FaceBook. But you can expand that reach on behalf of us all. Please pass the word about this group.
Together we could spark anew, the fervor, quality and advancement of plein-air painting in all media and genre for generations to come.
L. Diane Johnson

Sense and Sensibility: The paintings of Patricia Woodley and Brandy Gale
Both artists explore the landscape from two different perspectives, Brandy Gale from a Plein Air (in the field) perspective and Patricia Woodley from a perspective of, "the internal landscape". Patricia Woodley is an emerging regional artist and Brandy Gale is an emerging artist who resides in Prince Edward County (Quinte's Isle.) (Neither one of them are aware of each others artistic practice.)

Plein Air Florida Workshop Feb 21-22, 2009
Plein Air Painting workshop Longboat Key/Sarasota area
Oil/acrylic

Each day starts with a morning demonstration and lecture focusing on bold composition with underpainting.
You will learn to make quick decisions and simplify for the most impact. We will discuss Color relationships, detail, form and edges
Put the brakes on and learn to 'bake the cake' before you apply the frosting (accents)
Participants should be able to start a second painting for the afternoon session so it is suggested to work no larger than 12x16
Supervised painting until 4 pm each day
This workshop is focused on making you a faster and better painter, capturing the essence of the landscape
Workshop is from 10:00 - 4:00 pm
2 day Workshop Cost pp is $250.00 US
Plein Air painting TIP
With plein air painting, I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors. Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them. What plein air painting is about, is relating
your feelings about the scene, and not about copying nature.
I have seen artists walk around endlessly looking for subject.
A much more dramatic way to paint is to look for 'light'.
Subject is secondary for me. An ordinary object in a wondrous light becomes extraordinary !
And when you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finishing what you can do to make the painting
more exciting.
Is your painting missing something but you can't put your finger on it ?
It probably wasn't there to begin with...
Go for the drama !
