Plein Air Painter - April Feature Artist Larry Seiler

Artist Statement
Winston Churchill, also a painter, once said,
"Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm."
As painters we can certainly see the application of this simple yet profound statement, but in the arena of arts business it is true as well...in that sometimes life's curves in the road make the wanting of something bad enough eventually cause one to question one's own motives.  What does it mean to keep going...and to keep oneself enthused?
All artists experience bumps and bruises, and that's simply the nature of fleshing out a living, but for myself came the urging desire that painting be so much more.  More than reputation, more than reaching out to the promise and comfort of fine living,  painting has become a viable means to engage the moment, empowered to take in, see, digest and participate in a celebratory act.  A grand hoorah, a moment of praise!

It is a feeling of paying oneself straight away, acknowledging having been blessed to see more deeply.  To then find one's work a blessing to others, is a cup that runs over.

Plein Air Painter November- International Plein Air Painters

International Plein Air Painters November Feature Artist
BARBARA CHURCHLEY, IPAP

FEATURE ARTISTArtist Statement

Barbara Churchley’s paintings reflect her personal connection with the western landscape she lives in. Her paintings in pastel and oil are interpretive and expressive. Her passion for the outdoors has taken her to the summit of all 53 ranked 14,000’ peaks in Colorado. She has explored the landscape “up close and personal” through multiple marathons, hikes, and backpack trips. Churchley finds inspiration painting en plein air in western Colorado where she lives, to the far corners of the world where she frequently travels, pursuing her other passion of birdwatching.

IPAP Feature Artist August - David Scott McCurry

INTERNATIONAL PLEIN AIR PAINTERS FEATURE

DAVID SCOTT McCURRY
Greenville, South Carolina

My work is contemporary realism, which requires a plein air approach in technique. I use photographs sometimes to check the composition, tonal values, context, etc., but the actual painting is always done out in the open, in front of the subject. I am interested in urban, human activity in balance (sometimes in conflict) with nature. Age and history are elements I seek out when “scouting” a scene. Weathered wood and paint, rusty metal, crumbling buildings… these are things to which I know many in the plein air community can relate. My work as an academic in the field of education has taken me to many places in Africa , so much of my work was done there. I am currently interested in the urban development and rural history in and around the cities of Greenville and Abbeville, South Carolina . I use Winsor & Newton oils and sable brushes on traditional gessoed wood panels and paint in watercolor sometimes.

Feature Artist December 2007 - Barbara Perrotti - Florida

It is with strong motivation that I continue onward, having the same enthusiasm with which I first began my career as an artist. My time is filled with painting and working with my students. I try to instill in my students a feeling of inspiration and a thirst for learning. More than ever, my focus in 2008 is leaning towards people and their individual environments. My need to establish a sense of place; and beyond that, a moment of quality is of the utmost importance.... constantly treating my subject matter as mearly a vehicle to further explore the elements of painting.
Barbara Perrotti is listed in Who's Who in American Art and is an active member in the following professional organizations:

International Plein Air Painters ( Sig. Status, SE Ambassador),
National Mus. of Women in the Arts,
American Impressionist Society,
Southern Ladies Art Conference,
Plein Air Florida (Signature Status).

Barbara was instrumental in founding the Emmons Cottage Gallery Co-op, East Coast Plein Air and Group of Eight.
Ms. Perrotti takes part in various plein air invitationals and competitions. She began formal drawing lessons at the age of seven; further education included the Paier School of Art and studies with Robert Brackman, Lois Griffel and Burt Silverman.

Barbara has recently received a professional artist development grant to further her career.
