Workshop 2 day- Title : Problem solving ‘on your feet’ en plein air painting

Description :
2 day working on location workshop to help you achieve drama in your painting. Demo/lecture each morning.
You will learn to ‘bake the cake ‘before you applying the frosting.
Ever wondered why your finished painting bears little resemblance to the excitement you felt when starting your painting ?
Students will work on location and complete 2 12x16 or smaller paintings per day.


Goals :
What you can expect from this workshop
Students at the end of a 2 day workshop will be able to recognize a strong composition and see values using grisalle. This will enable you to make decisions when doing problem solving on your own, painting on location.
Grisaille studies, directly on canvas will enable you to commit to a composition and value plan instead of constantly adjusting your values and shadows, commonly known as ‘chasing the light’. This eliminates the also common fragmented, unfocused painting.

Experience level : Beginner to Intermediate

Prerequisite Student Skills: It is suggested that beginners have the experience of at least one drawing course.


Student Required Materials: The workshop is taught using a limited primary color pallette. A complete list of suggested oil & acrylic pigments is supplied. Canvas board or stretched canvas 12 x 16 or smaller. A support for canvas and carrying materials. Incidental list also provided. A painting umbrella is strongly suggested.

Lori Putnam Workshop: Understanding Better Composition (Nashville, TN)

May 1 and 2, 2009
$175 (50% deposit required)

No one likes to teach it or study it, but the truth is this . . . no matter how well you paint, if your composition is bad, so is your painting! With over 18 years in design experience, Lori will teach you what makes good design in a painting, where composition formulas can fail, and how to avoid your personal tendencies and pitfalls. Any medium is welcome! Demonstration will be directed at oil painters, but concepts and principles will apply to all media.

This two-day workshop includes 1½ days of class work, and plus ½ day (Fri. afternoon) **demonstration.

Class size limited to 10. **Demonstration open to the public.

**Friday afternoon demonstration followed by Q&A and is open to the public so invite your friends. Students registered for classes will have reserved seating. We also hope you will make plans to stay for Lori's reception of new Italian works at the gallery that evening.

Feature Plein Air Painter - Linda Warner Constantino

Linda is a professor of Illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia where she teaches Watercolor for the Illustrator, the Portrait in Illustration and Illustrating the Edible. She is an avid plein air painter and on weekends and during her summers she gives private lessons and teaches a Plein Air Painting Workshop at a "green hotel" and working organic farm in Tuscany, Italy.

Her paintings have been juried into national shows and she won the Winsor Newton Award at the Philadelphia Watercolor Club. She has a special love for small "pochade" paintings of landscapes and still lives and maintains a blog about them entitled "A Passion for Small Paintings" http://lwarnerconstantino.blogspot.com. Currently she is represented by Shop SCAD Gallery and the Hilton Head Art League as well as online at her website www.lwarnerconstantino.com.

One of our members is selected as the FEATURE ARTIST for a month at International Plein Air Painters WORLDWIDE Organization.

Colleague Plein Air Painters,

For years, I have personally heard rave reviews from many of you in person, via email, by phone and regular mail about Plein Air Magazine. Whether you were a subscriber or not, ever saw it or not, artists and galleries from everywhere were (and are still aware) of this most respected publication - and were saddened at its passing.

We now have a grand opportunity to let the publisher (who seeks our opinion and thoughts) offer our collective “voice”, and most of all of our support (or not) of bringing back Plein Air Magazine. Certainly there would be changes. Nevertheless, I remember the days of what I have always felt was our “Camelot” - when for the one bright shining moment, plein-air painting was put on the map in earnest.

The magazine promoted our plein-air heritage (which many of us never knew about), with features about masters of the past, present and future, along with artists getting out of their studios to discover painting on location for the first time. My personal observation was that the magazine had a direct and indirect impact on the plethora of professional and local groups rising up around the U.S. and the globe, collector education and more.

Please join me in this effort to MBRING BACK PLEIN AIR MAGAZINE.
